Early this morning, the whole of Africa and the black community the world over, heaved a sigh of relief following the election of Senator Barack Obama as the 43rd President of the United States of America (USA).
He thus fulfilled the dream Martin Luther King Jr had some 42 years ago.
his election also brought a new hope to many of my compatriots, who for one reason or the other, have lived with this perception that the black man is destined to fail, or that certain dreams are unachievable.
This is clear evidence that with determination, nothing is impossible.
What is more compelling about his victory is the fact that when he started, nobody gave him a dog chance, not because he was black, but especially because he did not the sort of resources that would make that dream feasible.
Nevertheless, he pressed on and devised a way of taking money from the electorate to do his campaign. he did not go to the big companies, rather the ordinary person, a dollar here, two there and for the first time, a democrat was able to raise more funds than a republican party.
This is a lesson that i hope my African politicians will learn, particularly incumbent parties or government who would loot the coffers of the country to fund their political activities and filled their bank accounts with the rest.
Opposition parties can also draw valuable lessons from this. instead of always looking up to donors for funding, they can now 'copy' this new novelty of Barack Hussein Obama and start putting their houses in order before the going gets tough.
This century is definitely that of the black race, just the other day, Lewis Hamilton became the first black to win the Formula 1 race, something that was not thought of some years back.
Gradually, we are taking our rightful place in society and it would not be long before we start ruling the world as we ought to be. after all we have more resources than any other continent yet we are the poorest. Provided we elect the right people as our leaders.
No matter how long the night is, the sun will surely rise.
